I hired Dan Riedemann and Nineteenth Century Restorations to finish off the attic of my one-and-a-half car garage as a cigar smoking room. I did not want to change the roofline of the garage and liked the coziness of the space, but the small dimensions presented a bit of a challenge for a builder. Since Dan had built my house, I knew he would be up to the task and approach this project with the necessary creativity.
We decided to give the interior the look of a 1950s ship’s cabin or Airstream, and looked at one of the Land Yachts that Dan had restored for inspiration. The stained and lacqurered plywood paneling Dan used looked exactly like we intended, and the craftsmanship and detail is first rate. He also constructed a set of stairs from reclaimed oak, and installed a casement window to match the existing windows. On the exterior, Dan surrounded the new window with half-timbering consistent with the Tudor revival look of our house and garage.
All in all, the room came out great and I’ve been enjoying climate controlled cigar smoking since last Fall!
